Important information about Washing your Doona
It is recommended that you wash your mattress protectors and doona’s at least
every six months.
Doonas are everyone’s dream to snuggle under on those cold winter mornings. It
might seem like a big mission to wash them but..…it’s important that they are kept
clean and hygienic, and they get dirty even with a cover over them.

Sheets do offer some protection from your body but the doona is still collecting all
your sweat and dead skin cells along with other nasty microbes. Plus moths are
more likely to eat it when they are dirty and bed bugs love dirt….YUCK!
If your scared of your doona turning into a saggy mess, I have listed a few tips below
so you can wash it safely.
Doonas are usually made with synthetic fillings and they can generally be washed. If
your doona fits in your washing machine you can put the cycle on a gentle wash with
minimum agitation with a normal spin. If not you have the option of putting it in your
bathtub or taking it to a commercial laundry mat. Always check the care label of a
feather and down filled doona as they may not be washable and need dry cleaning,
so respect the tag warnings otherwise you risk ruining it. Washing with cold water is
recommended unless you have those nasty bed bugs in which case you will need to
wash at 50C or more to kill the mites.

Once washed lay the doona out flat, like on the top of your clothes line in full sun (not
overcast) as the sun has its own way of killing bacteria. Do not put it away until it is
fully dry or you will get mould and the last thing you want is to pull your doona out for
winter and find a nasty mould surprise.
Handy Tips
Tip 1: Place 2 tennis balls in the machine apart from each other to help balance the
machine while washing
Tip 2: Use lux a flakes as this is a gentle detergent and smells great
Tip 3: Put in some eucalyptus oil (just half a cap) to help kill the germs
Tip 4: Lay out in full sun to dry as this will kill the remain germs
Tip 5: Most doonas only last about 3-6 years
***P.S. Instead of washing your pillows, put them out on the line once a week to get full
sun and kill the bacteria. This will help your pillows last longer
